Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Although she writes under the pen name J.K. ![]()

![]() ![]() For many of us who moved to San Francisco in the last couple decades, Linney was the one who came before us, the one we watched arrive here wide-eyed and immediately in love with this place. ![]() You can read SFist's initial take here, and see the glorious trailer, but first things first: There is no escaping the nostalgic feels of seeing Laura Linney return to San Francisco as the earnest, goofy, and endearing Mary Ann Singleton - a character she first played in the 1993 PBS miniseries, and continued to play in the 19 Showtime followups. Following its world premiere at the Castro Theatre in April, when one audience got to see Episode 1 of the rebooted series, Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City dropped all its 10 new episodes on Netflix on Friday. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One staff member approached us multiple times to share anecdotes relating to Oak Ridge, which was nice and unexpected! The staff at the museum seemed very friendly and knowledgeable, with some members being long-term residents and/or employees in Oak Ridge with firsthand experience related to the exhibits in the museum. It seems like it would make more sense to have more interactive, kid-friendly displays throughout, rather than packed in the back of the museum. The back half features many interactive displays obviously geared towards children. The front half of the museum is very wordy, mature, and packed with information. It's also hard to tell what age group this museum is catering to. I never had the chance to visit the museum in its previous location, however I can reinforce previous reviews that say this museum is very small. ![]() ![]() ![]() Driven by "social justice" and governed by "intersectionality," out-of-control college students, school administrators, journalists, and titans of the entertainment industry divide and rank us on an infinite scale of grievance-the more of them, the better. ![]() On university campuses, in the news media, and in Hollywood, race, gender, and sexuality determine who should advance and who should be taken down a peg. ![]() You can expect the future to take a definite form or you can treat it as hazily uncertain. He argues that you can choose to think of the future in either definite or indefinite terms, and that choice has a real effect on how you approach and live your life: Thiel covers a fair amount of ground, but I’m going ignore most of it in favor of discussing the one idea that’s stuck with me: his framing of definite thinking versus indefinite thinking. It’s easily digestible even as an audiobook. It is very much attuned to that particular environment, but I recommend it if you work in software anywhere. Zero To One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future is a collection of his thoughts about Silicon Valley startups. His track record of success makes him worth listening to. But he’s also brilliant, accomplished, and takes (for better and worse) unpopular public stances. ![]() Peter Thiel is a controversial figure for a good reason. ![]() ![]() ![]() The worst sin in an engineering material is not lack of strength or lack of stiffness, desirable as these properties are, but lack of toughness, that is to say, lack of resistance to the propagation of cracks. Just two figures, however, are not sufficient to characterize a material, especially when it's used to build a structure. The two properties together describe a solid about as well as you can reasonably expect two figures to do. Gordon summarizes these ideas succinctly.Ī biscuit is stiff but weak, steel is stiff and strong, nylon is flexible and strong, raspberry jelly is flexible and weak. Strength measures how much stress a material can withstand before failing. Stiffness describes how much a material lengthens when pulled (that is, strains when stressed), and is quantified by its Young’s modulus. In Chapter 1 of Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology, Russ Hobbie and I discuss two mechanical properties of a material: stiffness and strength. Recently, I reread Structures and read for the first time its sequel The New Science of Strong Materials: Or Why You Don’t Fall Through the Floor. It showed me to how engineers think about mechanics.
